Individual Health Insurance
- Smyrna, Georgia

If you or a family member has ever been sick or injured, you know how important it is to have health coverage. But if you’re confused about what kind is best for you, you’re not alone.

More than half of all Americans who have insurance are enrolled in some kind of managed care plan, a more structured way of both providing health services and paying for them. The initial impetus for managed care was a desire to contain costs. Increases in health-care costs had far outpaced increases in inflation throughout the ‘80s and into the ‘90s.

Today there is a full range of health insurance choices. These include Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs).

HMOs control their costs by contracting with their own
doctors and managing their own facilities. As a member
of an HMO, you select a Primary Care Physician. This
doctor is always the first person you see if you
need medical attention. Any follow-up care or referrals
must be arranged by your Primary Care Physician. With
HMOs, members pay little or no deductibles or coinsurance.

PPOs are networks of physicians, medical
facilities, and hospitals. Members of PPOs
have a list of doctors and specialists from
which to choose, and may move in and out of
the network, however, a higher set of
deductibles and/or coinsurance amounts will apply.
